With so many brands and choices for these types of doors are available such as the Wayne Dalton doors and rolling steel doors, it is not uncommon to see people pondering over which one to get for their home. Here we will go over a few types of garage doors that are commonly available in the market today, to help individuals make that decision.

    Types of Garage Doors

For those who are just venturing into this realm, below are the types of garage doors that are available for consumers today. They are:

    • Rolling Steel Doors
    • Composite and Wooden Doors
    • Fiberglass and Tempered Doors

The type of material used in constructing these garage doors is evident from their names. In order to determine which one would be best for your home, we will look at some variables that people use when purchasing.

Cost – Working on a Limited Budget

For those individuals who are on a tight budget but would like a get a fair quality garage door, rolling steel doors would be best for them. They cost considerably less than their counterparts and are much easier to maintain. They come in a variety of designs without having any effect on their mechanism. They do not require expensive upkeep. They eliminate the need for painting which lowers maintenance costs. Some rolling steel doors even come with insulation which can keep the interior temperature of the garage at comfortable levels thereby lowering energy costs.

    Quality – Looks Matter!

Wooden doors offer a great alternative for people who wish for an attractive looking door to match their wooden homes. There is no shortage of design and selection here and they are much easier to maintain compared to steel. However their cost is somewhat hefty and so is their upkeep. The wooden type doors have to be painted and their structure is prone to scuff and scratch marks though it can be removed with the proper application of anti-scratch solutions.

Elegance and Finesse – Going the Extra Step

Fiberglass garage door is what you are looking for here. They are extremely attractive and add to the beauty of the entire house. The added glass only enhances the elegance and finesse of the overall structure and makes the entire house stand out from the rest. Wayne Dalton and CHI Doors are a couple of prominent name brands who deal with Fiber glass doors. Obviously this luxury comes at a cost, though many people find it worth every penny once the doors are fully installed and operational.

    Garage Door Troubleshooting Tips

The garage door is a complex mechanical system with many moving parts that can break; springs, pulleys, cables, brackets. While many doors are built and installed to last for a long time without maintenance, eventually something is going to happen. So if you are having garage door problems do not fret, there are a number of reasons it may be acting up and some of them can be taken care of by you at no or low cost. Read on to learn a few troubleshooting tips for your garage door.

    1. The first thing you should do if you are having trouble with your garage door is to check the power on your opener. While “Is it plugged in?” may sound silly, it would be sillier to spend time troubleshooting mechanical parts only to find out the electric cord was accidental unplugged or a fuse had blown.
    2. Next check the batteries in your door opener remote is not dead. Again, another quick and simple check can save you headache and frustration.
    3. If the power cord is plugged in and your batteries are good but your door still wont open the next thing you should do is look at the track that the door runs along. This will be on either side of the door and has ball bearings allowing the door to easily roll up and down inside of it. Do a visual inspection to see if there has been any damage; bending, warping, or something wedged inside. If there is something stuck inside, remove it with a screw driver. Never put your fingers inside the track. If it is dented, use a hammer and try to lightly tap it back into shape. If the track is too severely damaged you will need to call a company to replace it. Many companies, from garage door repair in Las Vegas to a service company in Maine will often give you a quote right over the phone.
    4. Check the sensors are aligned properly and are plugged in. These are located at the base of the door and look like tiny cameras. They shoot an infrared beam that tells the system their is nothing obstructing the path of the door. If this beam is broken or not turned on the garage door will not operate.

If after having gone through these steps you are still having trouble it is best to call a professional. Everything up to this point is fairly safe and low risk to you. However as this is a system that is under tension it is possible to make a mistake that could loosen something, causing a part to go flying and seriously injure you or damage property.

Don’t Waste Your Money on Cheap Garage Doors Prior to Reading This!

Does your garage door look like an item out of a horror film? Are there peeling paint, dents, dings, or has it not been able to open or close in years? There are options you can unearth cheap garage doors, although the major point to prices will be which kind you require.

Just What Are Garage Doors Constructed From?

The least expensive model will likely be those manufactured from light weight aluminum. These are strong, durable, plus they offer a good degree of security and safety for the house. However, they can commonly show indications of wear somewhat quickly and lots of people don’t like this variety. Wood is rather sought after, and it’s also often available in many distinct finishes and designs. This is commonly the more expensive type, although the look for the home is fantastic. In the middle, there’s fiberglass and steel. With today’s engineering, the steel can certainly compete with timber with regards to appearance, but genuine timber always takes first amid homeowners for aesthetics. Fiberglass is an excellent alternative for warm, moist places, especially those in costal areas. It does not rust, nor will aluminum.

The one advantage you will find from shopping from the do-it-yourself warehouse is that you may get unit installation performed for an economical price.

Normally, this is not advised if you don’t possess some skills within this area. Fitting the garage door, track, and opener is a really huge endeavor if you have never completed such a job in the past. Also, it is one that will require extra assistance, as these garage doors are definitely not light-weight. Carriage Style Garage Doors

Carriage style garage doors have turned out to be a favorite choice of garage doors for many people who would love to combine the beauty and durability of well fitted steel lined with wood to give the perfect look as well as the strength and security expected of a garage door.

There is a wide range of designs of carriage style to choose from as long as you already have an idea of what you need in mind. Besides the basic functionality of the doors, most of them are made in very beautiful and charming appearance. Among some of the most outstanding features available to choose from is the swing-out door which is made with lots of advantages of a built-in modern garage door.

Available designs include shaker, traditional, French county, Tudor, Victorian and craftsman. All these designs are made in very smart and beautiful architectural styles which gives the doors an external appeal combined with the toughness of a typical garage door. The variety gives any potential the flexibility to choose whichever design fits their situation.

Materials used to make them would vary depending on the situation at hand and the choice of the client. In many cases t is advisable to make the choice of material with the assistance of the contractor so that you do not end up choosing a design and material that will not work well with the other fittings on your building. The most common materials used to make them include wood and metal among others. The choice of the material should be made after careful consideration of the place where the door is to be fitted.

Many people are not keen on having carriage style doors that have to be closed and opened manually. Besides being cumbersome to operate, they could as well turn out to be a security risk. Many cases have been reported where muggers capitalize on the fact that the driver has to step out of the car to open the garage door before driving through to attack the unsuspecting victim. If the carriage style garage doors would have been designed with sliding mechanisms that can be remotely operated, it would be very easy for the driver to reverse fast enough and drive off to safety whenever they feel threatened.

Taking the safety concerns into consideration, the carriage styles have been designed in different ways to take care of the concerns that have been raised. Depending on the space available and the design of the wall, some garage doors can be fitted to open to the outside while others can open to the inside of the garage. All the two options will depend on the size of the garage. If the garage is too small to give the carriage style doors room to open to the inside and the space outside also proves to be minimal, you could as well go for the sliding doors which will go into the wall. Sliding doors give more room and could easily be connected to automatic remote controlled systems for better convenience.

    Door Swelling and Sticking

The dilemma of swollen doors has been around since the first carpenter manufactured a wooden door and installed it in a home. As most houses have a dozen or more interior doors and at least two exterior doors, home owners must deal with this dilemma every time the season changes from humid summers to drier winters.

During these seasonal changes the inside humidity changes which causes wooden doors to expand and contract. As the doors swell and stick as humid weather approaches the home owner frequently becomes befuddled as to how to remedy the problem. Sticky, creaky, and nuisance doors is a problem nearly every homeowner can relate to. Sometimes the door won’t shut and other times it’s a major project to get the door to open.

Door problems can be caused by a variety of factors in addition to humidity such as hardware failure, wear and tear, shifting in the house structure or improper installation from the start.

There are several remedies to resolve the cycle of sticking doors during weather changes. Normally when doors are installed the doors the carpenter allows for seasonal swelling by insuring there is sufficient clearance between the door panel and casing. As most doors are pre-hung units they must be installed near perfectly straight and level (plumb) to allow for equal clearance between the door panel and the casing.

If the door is just slightly out of plumb the clearance will not be equal. An out of plumb door will either cause a jamming problem immediately or when there is a humidity change. It is nearly impossible to make an out of plum door plum without removing and reinstalling it. If the problem is severe this may be the only solution although there are others to consider.

If you live in an excessively high humid area try a dehumidifier. Not only will it help the swollen door problem it will also make the inside of your home more comfortable by lowering the humidity. If the problem is just a slight sticking it can be resolved by applying bar soap to the sticky edge or get out the sand paper and do some light sanding. If it is necessary to sand the sticky edge you may have to reapply the pant finish.

    Tips for swollen stuck doors

If it is obvious where the door is sticking, sand the area using a light sand paper and reapply finish paint. If it is not obvious use a piece of carbon paper to locate the sticky point then sand that area until the door operates freely.

Check for hardware failure such as loose screws and hinges. Tighten any loose screws and check the door for sticking. If the problem still persists look further.

Check to see if the door and frame has shifted or is misaligned. Look carefully around the strike plates and bolt. If there is a misalignment take out the strike plate and file it to fit properly. If the bolt is out of alignment the frame may have to be adjusted by installing longer screws in the hinges or putting in additional finish nails to reset or reposition the jam.

If the door is jamming along the bottom edge and items 1, 2 or 3 will not solve the problem it is probably caused by either a swollen door or the floor beneath the door may be swollen due to the humidity or moisture from water entry. In either case it may be necessary to remove the door and repair the floor beneath the door by sanding and applying a sealer to keep the moisture out. Replace or install weather stripping as necessary.

If these suggestions do not remedy your sticky or jamming door problems consider bringing in a professional carpenter to assist you.

Patio doors were originally created to replace French doors, offering an uninterrupted view of the natural daylight coming into the house, and providing easy access to the outdoors. As a result, patio doors are still hugely popular and due to demand, have become somewhat more elaborate over the years. However, they were not completely able to replace French doors; whereas the style and design of a French door is still seen as a classic and timeless look. However, the two are able co-exist on the market, benefiting the home-owner who has a choice of door options to consider.

At one point, a patio door was not a very secure entryway and easily accessible from the outside. Over time improvements have been made so now this is not as great an issue as it previously had been. There is also another issue of safety because the door, being a solid sheet of glass, is often seen as being open when it is actually not. To help remedy possible injuries, safety glass is now used to prevent people, especially children, from running headlong into the closed doors and getting severe lacerations.

When it comes to being energy efficient, patio doors perform very well. They are made with a series of brushes and seals which adhere to very stringent building code regulations. Producing the vinyl for door and window frames requires three times less energy to produce than manufacturing aluminum, thus making this product not only more cost effective, but also environmentally /energy friendly. To put this in perspective, it saves enough energy to heat almost 20, 000 single swelling family homes a year.

Most patio doors are made from vinyl or metal frames. The vinyl frames are made with up to 80% vinyl resin and then the remaining 20 % can be made up from various additives such as stabilizers to help prevent cracking and peeling. Pigments are also added to add the desired color as well to help create UV protection. Other additives help in preventing damage done during the shipping process.

Once the vinyl compound has been made, the chemical additives are locked in. Then, the resulting material is softened and forced through a die creating the unique shape that will eventually become the frame. These extruded pieces are shipped on pallets to the window / door fabricator where they are cut to the specified lengths and dimensions required to make the patio door.

After machines have cut the components to be assembled, the frames are often fusion welded together to form air tight and water tight seals at the corners. The installation of locks, keepers, balances, weather stripping, and finally the glass, are completed and the process is sent to quality control where the work is checked for air tightness, water tightness, and for any possible damages done to the frame or glass during assembly.

The use of vinyl frames for your patio door and windows helps your glass door maintain an even temperature so that there are limited condensation and humidity differences in the home. The quality of the air in the household is also greatly improved because glass doors mean less electricity is needed to heat and light the house. Lastly, an additional environmental bonus is the elimination of paint, stains, strippers, thinners which are not needed to maintain the patio doors appearance and function; saving the environment from harmful odors, chemical disposal, as well as leaving the home owner with free time to enjoy the view.

Patio doors are a great addition to any home and they can even increase the value of the home.

Creating a Grand Entrance – Front Doors Make a Lasting Impression

First impressions are everything, especially when someone is walking up to your front doors for the first time. Imagine if the paint was peeling off, or there was a large scratch down the panels. No matter how spectacular the inside of the house may be, the front door is the first and last thing guests will see. The front door to a home sets a tone, tells a story. Maybe the door is a solid mahogany multi-panel, and features beveled glass accents, and rich heavy hardware. The simple elegance creates quite a statement and lets the guests know that they are arriving somewhere impressive. Front doors should be indicative of the architectural style of the home, but also express the personal style of the homeowner. Some styles of doors are literally pieces of art, and should be considered thoughtfully.

Choosing a front door does not have to be an arduous task, but should also not be taken for granted. Consider the type of door opening the home. Will it support a single door with sidelights to each side, or is a double door more appropriate? Would an arched top set off the entrance in a more stately way, or should it be a door with expressive moldings and carving? Should the door be painted or stained? The options are countless.

The right set of front doors will not be inexpensive; however they provide a solid investment in your home. Solid wood pre-hung doors are an excellent choice for their ease of installation, and for their natural beauty. A wood door that is finished properly will last a long time, and provide excellent insulation from both noise and weather. The warm look of the wood will create a homey, inviting atmosphere to the home, practically begging for guests to come over.

A smart looking front door will also enhance the value of the home by making the entrance more important. Options are typically available in hardwoods such as mahogany, cheery, knotty pine, alder, and teak. These species of wood have excellent resistance to weather when properly sealed, and can come distressed if the home is more rustic in style. Paint grade wood doors are available in pine, birch or hemlock for styles that call for more color. Numerous options of glass are also typically available, whether it is beveled, stained glass, or textured. The style of glass should complement the door as well as the home.

The front doors to a home will provide lasting satisfaction and provide a beautiful impression from the curb. Whether the home is traditional or contemporary, there is a style of wood door to complement it. The options are limitless to find that perfect design element.
