House Paint – 6 Tips For Choosing the Right Products
If you want to give your home a beautiful custom paint job or if you are wanting to start your own house painting business you may want to consider exactly which house paint to use for interior and exterior projects.
As a professional house painter I know the time saving value of getting to know your products. When you find which house paints work best for you and how they perform you will be able to turn your jobs all that much faster with less headaches.
Below are some tips to help you do a professional job at home or on the job site.
Interior House Paint:
1.) Which Brand to Use – Play it safe. Always use the best quality paints and primers. Don’t show up at someone’s doorstep with humdrum brands. Instead pretend you are going to be painting a multimillion dollar home. Now what name brand would you choose?
Not everyone may agree on the same brands of house paint of course. Don’t skimp on your own home either. After all, a man’s home is his castle! They only exception is if you are doing properties or commercial work where quality may not matter as much.
2.) What to Use on Interior Walls – I like using a “Matte” finish on interior walls. Matte finish is a lower sheen than eggshell, yet very washable, very architectural looking. Benjamin Moore has a nice Matte finish in their “Regal” line that is super washable and won’t burnish when scrubbed.
3.) What to Use on Ceilings – the best interior house paint I ever used on ceilings is actually a primer made by Porter Paints called “Blanket” (PP 1129). It is basically a high hiding solid white block out primer.
While nobody would even think of using a primer as a ceiling paint, this stuff works! It leaves a soft, pure white, flat even finish with no streaks or lap lines. You can tint it to whatever color you want. It also makes a great block out primer.
The benefits to using this solid white primer on ceilings are being that it is a primer, it grabs to any surface. It dries and can be re-coated in just one hour and coverage is about 150 square feet more per gallon than regular paint. And spreads way better than regular ceiling paint. One last point is that you can tell where you have to roll on the second coat because the first coat over looks like a primer coat.
4.) Woodwork Paint – in the old days up till the early 90′s, alkyd or oil base enamels in the “satin finish” were the norm for woodwork. Benjamin Moore “Satin Impervo®” in the alkyd formula is still a market leader. Since the 90′s the government has cracked down on V.O.C.’s in house paint (volatile organic compounds) and some alkyd formulas may not be as fun to paint with as they used to be (some of the good stuff has been taken out of the paint).
Fortunately Satin Impervo now comes in a latex formula that is so awesome I don’t want to paint woodwork with anything else. It feels and levels like alkyd enamel should. I also use their Fresh Start® All Purpose 100% Acrylic Primer 023 as my enamel under coater.
Sherwin Williams also has a good alkyd enamel called ProClassic® Alkyd and their PrepRite® Classic Primer which is also alkyd base and is an enamel under coater (holds gloss) is also a good choice. Both are also available in a latex formula as well.
Exterior House Paint:
5.) What to Use on Exterior Siding, Windows and Doors: for exterior again, use the very best quality paints and primers. For exterior siding I like to use MoorGard® 100% Acrylic Low Lustre Latex House Paint N103 or their MoorGlo® 100% Acrylic House & Trim Paint N096.
For garage doors, windows, entry ways, etc. I like to use the MoorGlo® which is equivalent to a satin sheen or finish. In most cases I would use the MoorGard® on siding. It’s low-lustre is equivalent to an eggshell finish or sheen level.
6.) Exterior Primers – I use Benjamin Moore’s Fresh Start® All Purpose 100% Acrylic Primer 023 as my enamel under coater. They also have an exterior oil base primer for bare wood that is stain blocking.
These are my personal favorites. You may want to use the Sherwin Williams line of house paint. They also have high quality products. Every painter has different preferences. Location may be another factor.

Paint Removal With an Infrared Heat Gun
Most professionals agree that the key to a great paint job is in the preparation. That preparation means effective paint stripping back to the timber substrate to ensure a quality finish that enhances properties, returning them to their original condition.
The traditional methods for paint removal include heat guns, sanding, shaving, toxic and non-toxic chemicals, and sand blasting; all are labour-intensive and potentially harmful. The costs for these methods of removing paint vary greatly and should include: materials and equipment; allowances for labour time with set-up, application, waiting time and clean-up; not forgetting the additional costs needed to lower the risks to workers, home owners, the environment, and the wood itself. Sounds expensive; potentially it is.
Another key consideration when removing paint is the impact that any method will have on the wood. Chemicals can leach out natural resins and leave a residue in the wood even after it has been rinsed or neutralised. High heat (600pC) from heat guns can force the paint pigment back into the wood, as well as scorch it. Sanding and shaving can leave gouge marks and even scorch marks if not done by a skilled technician. Sand blasting has to be done by professionals and can cause damage to the wood.
Infrared paint stripping is by far the gentlest process on the wood; particularly beneficial for listed properties where the preservation of the original, old wood is desired. The infrared heat penetrates into the wood and actually pulls up the natural resins deep in the wood to rejuvenate it. It also pulls up the paint or varnish which has sunk into the wood allowing them to be scraped off more thoroughly. The heat removes extra moisture deep in the wood and neutralises mildew and fungus. Yet, the lower temperature of 200-300pC minimises the risk of scorching or the wood catching fire.
With this infrared paint stripper the wood is immediately ready for applying a primer. In fact, it is preferable to do this priming within hours of scraping to assure ambient moisture does not seep back into the wood. Little, if any, sanding is necessary on the wood surface and there is no waiting time for drying or neutralisation. When working on windows, the infrared will not only remove paint but if you so wish the putty can be softened by the method too allowing easy putty removal without glass breakage for a complete refurbishment. Over blackened beams, or worst still painted ones, provide an opportunity to use infrared, particularly as some systems come with stands and arms allowing hands-free operation.
Preservationists and listed property owners are most often interested in this form of infrared wood stripping for its time-saving steps, safety features, low environmental impact, benefit to the old wood and superior performance when removing multiple layers.
In a listed property you can be assured that there is a 99.98% chance that it will contain some lead based paint. Hence the use of the infrared method for paint stripping and varnish removal is more cost effective, time-saving, eco-friendly and ultimately safer. Growing up, I had a good friend named Reggie who lived in a house that was always clean, always well decorated. Due to this fact, painting and decorating has always come easy for me.
His mom liked to do a quick re-paint of their whole house every spring. She and Reggie (his dad died when he was young) would take a whole week to give everything a fresh coat of paint. His mom was a very clean women. She was raised on a farm and I guess people back then farm kids were raised well.
Because my best friend and his mom would take a few days to go throughout the house painting, no doubt this made an impression on me. I would come into the kitchen or go through their house and everything was nice and new. A nice lifestyle. Something painting decorating is all about – it adds flavor to our lives.
As I got older and found a wife, I moved into one of my grandfathers apartments. I noticed that he was a good painter also. He painted white ceilings with pastel color walls and the woodwork trim was enameled white also. So from these two experiences alone I learned how to be a good painter decorator.
Basically if I was to do a custom interior paint job, I would get custom color charts from the paint store. Paint stores have historical custom color charts with three-color schemes. This helps to take the guesswork out of matching and choosing colors as well as planning out a color scheme for each room.
From there all you have to do is pick your curtains, bedspreads, carpeting, rugs etc. and match them to your new paint job. That’s basically all there is to doing interior decorating as far as I see it. Then comes the talent. Some people have a knack for putting colors together that it looks really good.
If you just moved into a new house and there is existing carpeting that you don’t want to change, tile floors, stained woodwork or painted woodwork that you plan on keeping the same, you simply have to match up new colors to those existing items.
I painted for an interior decorator off and on for a few years until they moved to another city. I painted most of her house inside and some of the outside. She had a real knack for pictures, wallpaper and furniture. She also had the money to do it all.
Painting decorating the outside of your home can be mentioned here also. There are exterior custom color charts that show three-color patterns or scenarios, even historical colors.
It can get rather pricey to live life at its best when it comes to painting and decorating your home. If you do a little bit at a time it can be a fun hobby. One thing that I highly recommend as a painter decorator is to use quality paints and wall coverings. Never skimp on these things. After all, why waste your precious time and resources on inferior materials? Especially if you have to live with it.
I like to see people put different colors in every room so that every room that you enter is a treat to the eyes and the emotions. I like to see colors that gradually flow from one room to the next gracefully. It’s the little things like that that create the nicer lifestyle. There is power in color. Colors effect our moods.
Some people that I have painted for will put the same drab color in every room throughout the house as if they got a special deal on the paint or something. And some people never paint any rooms until they move out. They never get to enjoy the paint job.
Now I’m not all that good at choosing colors. I remember a friend in school that had some of those doodle art pens and was coloring a psychedelic VW Beetle. All his colors he chose were amazing. They all went together so well and they were bright.
As long as I use a custom color matching chart from the paint store I can do a pretty good job when painting and decorating houses. Nonetheless some people have real knack for making awesome colors flow.
